SMACNA's History

Founded in 1943, SMACNA traces its history to the National Association of Sheet Metal Contractors established in 1910. Many contractors found it necessary to group together to develop a pool of expertise for the emerging heating, ventilating, and sheet metal industry.

These contractors in 1943 knew, as SMACNA members know today, that through communication and cooperation, they can broaden mutual opportunities and solve mutual problems. As a result, architects, engineers, general contractors, developers and building owners can be confident that SMACNA members offer unexcelled competency, efficiency, and skilled construction.

SMACNA is a professional association that offers more than 1,944 sheet metal and air-conditioning contractor members with assistance in areas ranging from business management, laborer relations, marketing, governmental affairs, to technical research and development - on both a national and local level.

SMACNA has members in Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico,  Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom besides its more than ninety-eight chapters throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and Brazil. The Association is contractor-driven. A Board of Directors, elected from the contractor membership, serves as the policy-making body of the Association.

SMACNA's successes and strengths rest with the involvement of every contractor member. Approximately 250 members actively participate on national committees. Members are also active in their local SMACNA chapter activities. Dedication to professional excellence keeps SMACNA and its members leading in the construction industry today.

SMACNA has developed over thirty technical publications, videos, charts, and guidelines which are considered international standards for our industry. Committees of contractors from throughout North America develop the publications which range from HVAC Duct Construction Standards to Kitchen Equipment Guidelines. SMACNA's Guidelines for Seismic Restraint of Mechanical Systems has become the guidebook for architects, engineers, design professionals, and contractors.
